Canadian citizenship test is a mandatory test for anyone who wants to become a Canadian citizen. It will be administered by the department of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship. This test is to assess an eligible resident knowledge on Canada’s history, culture, law and politics along with Canadian values, such as democracy, gender equality, and human rights.

Anyone who is a legal resident of Canada aged 18 and over and who meet the basic requirements for citizenship, such as permanent resident status, physical presence in Canada, filing income tax, language skills, pass a citizenship test and take the oath of citizenship. Few additional or different requirements are available for a minor, adopted child born outside Canada and applicant aged over 54 years.

Adult (18 and over): C$ 630.00 (Processing fee:  C$ 530.00 + Right of citizenship fee: C$ 100.00)

Minor (under 18): C$ 100.00 (Processing fee:  C$ 100.00)

Most of the applicants will be invited to take the citizenship test online. If an accommodation for accessibility or other reasons required, then applicant may receive an in person or Microsoft Teams or different test format invite.

Total 20 multiple choice or true or false questions. One need to get at least 15 out of 20 questions right to pass the test (i.e., 75%).

Applicants can take their test in either English or French. The test will be 45 minutes long, which will be sufficient to complete and review your test.

Any test will be hard if one hasn’t prepared enough. In order to pass the test, applicant should get at least 15 out of 20 questions (75%). With right effort and practice, this can be achieved. Currently, around 80% of test takers are clearing the test in first attempt after having proper practice test and understanding the Discover Canada study guide.

Applicants will have up to three chances to the pass the test via online or Microsoft Teams or in person. If applicant fails all three times, department of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship will invite them to a hearing with a citizenship official. At hearing, applicant will be questioned orally that are similar to those on the citizenship test. If applicant fails that too, then their application will be refused and they need to reapply by paying applicable fees again.
